BIO of the Band

xxxCAP AU SUD were formed around the 2000 by Argentian Ricardo Jocobsohn and french Michel Bontemps. Ricardo is a lover of the Latin music of the 40's, 50's and 60's the rumbas, boleros and mambos that he sings and plays with heart and passion.

xxxThe group first consisted of two percussionists (Michel Bontemps and Luis Campos) piano (Phillipe Rak) and Double bass (Illes Kamarti) with Ricardo on lead vocals and sax/flute, playing original material in an "Afro pop" style.
The music soon envolved into a more "Afro-Latin" sound, which was to be the name of their first album.
Over the next five years the band performed hundreds of concerts in the Picardie and Somme, regions of France, and played at the world famous Amiens Jazz Festival for three consectitive years.

Times changes

xxxAs with many groups the band went through some changes in the line up. Louis left to be replaced by Pascal Noël, and due to work commitments Philippe and Illes also parted company with the group, leaving Michel to find their replacements, which in turn led to the inclusion of long time friend Thierry Paul on bass and Jeremy Gielar a young pianist spotted at a jam session in Soissons. Tragedy struck the band when Pascal was killed in a car accident returning from a concert in Laon. Jean Phillippe Lepreux (Daddy) a mutual friend of Pascal and Michel replaced him during the " Castel-Talents Concerts" (2005) in Chateau-Thierry. The following year due to health reasons Jeremy left and was soon to be replaced by Camille Geoffroy a pianist and tuba playing, friend of "Daddy".

2007, the new sound

xxxWhich leads us to the current Capausud line up of Ricardo Jacobsohn on lead vocals saxophone and flute, Camille Geoffroy on piano, Thierry Paul on electric bass, Michel Bontemps on drums, Jean- Phillippe Lepreux on congas and Arnaud Cochenet on trumpet.
Over the years through line up changes and the experience of the musicians, the music has envolved into a more incisive and modern sound, due in no small fact to the inclusion of electric bass and drums added to the timbales.
The group play a range of original material from smooth salsa to lively latin jazz alongside their own interpetations of classics such as"El manicero" (Peanut vendor) and "Caravan" by Duke Ellington.
Capausud recorded their second album "Cumbancha" and performing at various venues.

2009

But as always, each has to follow his road and after two years of collaboration, Daddy and Thierry leave the band.Victorio BOUFFET, replace Daddy at congas and Christian DUPERRAY, Accomplished and professional Parisian musician for several years replaces Thierry in the bass. This group is going to turn a moment with a song list mixing new pieces, pieces oldest and covers. Michel, by souçi of economy of means but also to refind the extraordinary magic of the rhythms of the salsa took advantage of it to return to the main part : he leaves the drum kit for the typically Latin percussions: timbalès.

xx2011: Return in the magic rhythms

Two new musicians: Simon VILLE joins us in September and takes the place of conguero within Cap Au Sud. Simon is an accomplished percussionist, with a robust experience in the salsa community because he holds the post of timbaléro in the orchestra of Orlando Poleo in Paris since more than ten years, and Julien MAZINGANT also joins the team in October as conguéro but this time rather for the quartet Cuarto Del Sud. Julien is a young very promising musician from Reims who already possesses an excellent knowledge of the rhythms and the techniques of the salsa and Latin-jazz music. Christian, the bass player, takes advantage of it to exchange his bass for the benefit of the double bass, what brings us a warmer and deeper sound. The efficiency, the groove, the energy and the enjoyment to play are in produce you with this new band which was never so close to its full maturity. The song list still grew rich of new compositions.
